Robert R. "Bird" Wirtanen

Robert R. “Bird” Wirtanen, 70, passed away unexpectedly at home on August 27, 2025. Born on November 20, 1954, he was the son of the late Edwin J. Wirtanen and Jeannine Desrosiers. Robert was known to many by his cherished nicknames—Papa, Dadda Big Guy, Bobby, and Bird. However people knew him, all will remember his warmth, humor, and generous spirit.                                                                                                   

A graduate of Oakmont Regional High School, Robert went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Fitchburg State University. Football was always an important part of his life, particularly through his involvement with Oakmont Pop Warner. He was also an avid runner who proudly completed three Boston Marathons. Robert had a gift for connecting with people—there wasn’t a place he went where he didn’t know someone, and he left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He is survived by his loving wife, Christine, and their three daughters: Hannah Michaels and her husband Dave of Fitchburg, MA; Elizabeth Wirtanen and her fiancé Walter Bettencourt of Pelham, NH; and Olivia Lucier and her husband Zack of Westminster, MA. Robert was the proud grandfather of Baylie Gene, Landon, Ryan, Charlotte, and Brett, who brought him endless joy.

He was one of ten children, survived by his siblings John, Eddie, Anna, Lisa, Kathy, and Roberta, and predeceased by three brothers: Danny, Billy, and Michael. Robert is also survived by many nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him dearly.

Robert and Christine shared many happy moments together, including refinishing furniture for their business and spending time outdoors. He cherished his quiet moments climbing Mount Wachusett, but his greatest passion was his family. He was always ready to lend a hand, give of himself, and support those he loved.

Robert will be remembered for his kindness, his energy, and his unwavering generosity. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life, along with calling hours, will be held at Bread of Life Church, 22 State Rd E, Westminster, MA 01473, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with a memorial service to follow.
