Richard “Dick” Joseph Chaisson passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024. Born in Athol, Massachusetts on January 9, 1935, Dick was a creative, witty, loving and inspiring individual whose contributions to his community will be remembered for generations to come. He was a patriotic man who served in the United States Air Force as an Airman 1st Class during the Vietnam War era. He and his father and five older brothers all served in the military voluntarily.

Dick began his newswriting career at the Athol Daily News. In 1996 he retired after many years as a dedicated reporter covering Athol and surrounding towns for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

His passion for local history, American folklore, and New England’s rich heritage was evident in his work and hobbies. This love for his community was honored with numerous awards, including the Athol Knights of Columbus Anchor Award and recognition by Athol Hospital and the Board of Selectmen for his tireless efforts in preserving Athol’s past. His devotion to his Catholic faith was manifested in his book, “The Life of A Parish,” a history of Our Lady Immaculate Church in Athol. In retirement he continued to spend countless hours collecting and documenting local history.

Dick found joy in spending time with his family, photography, playing the piano, and enjoying his yard.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Marie (Guignard) Chaisson, daughters, Dr. Susan Goodwin and her husband Russell Goodwin, Kathryn Chaisson, Nancy Chaisson; son Jon Chaisson and his wife Amanda Taylor-Chaisson; his cherished sister, Maryann “Janet” Deitz, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Cecile Chiasson, brothers Henry Jr., Leo, Edward (“Toots”), Raymond (“Pun”), and Maurice (“Moe”), and close family friend David Flint.

Dick’s legacy will continue through his family and the countless lives he touched with his spirit, love for family and dedication to the Athol community.
