It is with smiles on our faces and love in our hearts that we celebrate the life of Michaele Louise (Thayer) Bartus—affectionately known as Mickey, Mick, Mom, Momsy, Gram, Little, and Tricksy to those lucky enough to be part of her world.
Born on December 3, 1941, in Ware, MA, Mickey was a lifelong Petersham resident whose unwavering commitment to family, friends, and community touched everyone she met. Whether working at the Country Duffer, dispatching for the police and fire departments, or lending a hand at Templeton Spirits, Mickey was always there—ready with a helping hand and a generous spirit.
Mickey brought fun and a dash of mischief wherever she went. She was as dependable as the seasons, always showing up for her loved ones. A proud member of the “Cocktail Club,” she could often be found enjoying laughter and good company with Monika, Robert, Dickie, Rebecca, and the occasional passerby. Until recent years, Mickey was best known for her daily walks—miles through town with a wave, a smile, and a cheerful “hi” for everyone she encountered. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her three grandsons and three great-grandsons.
Mickey leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by her adoring husband Richard; daughters Anne-Marie Bartus (Mike), Margaret Cooley, and Jennifer Bartus (Tony); grandchildren Kyle Cooley, Tyler Cooley (Brittney), and Joshua Cooley (Kim); great-grandchildren Colton Cooley, Walker Cooley, Cooper Cooley, and Baby Cooley, expected to arrive soon. She is also survived by siblings Carolyn Coughlin, Patricia Kellogg, John Thayer, and sister-in-law Judy Thayer; as well as many nieces and nephews. Mickey now joins her parents, Robert and Louise Thayer, and brother Robert Thayer, Jr.
We invite you to share your stories, raise a glass, and celebrate Mickey’s remarkable life on Sunday, December 21st, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Athol Legion, 325 Pequoig Avenue, Athol, MA.
