Mary E. Alger

July 21, 1938 — November 22, 2025

Templeton

Mary E. Alger, 87, of Baldwinville, died peacefully Saturday, November 22, 2025 surrounded by her family.

Mary, daughter of the late Edwin S. and Vieno (Ahola) Prentiss, was born July 21, 1938 in Gardner. She was a Class of 1956 graduate from Gardner High and lived in Hubbardston before moving to Baldwinville in 1999.

She was a bookkeeper for Wain-Roy, Sabettini Printing, and Chairtown Lumber. After retirement, she could be found enjoying Thursday night bingo, cribbage at the Hubbardston Senior Center, or playing her favorite penny slots at the casino.

Mary will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her illustrious storytelling, and, most of all, her quick-witted sense of humor and infectious laugh.

She was a talented piano player who also enjoyed crocheting, cross stitch, and spending time with her many closest friends. Above all, Mary was especially devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with whom she would spend Friday nights having sleepovers, teaching them how to play video games on her Super Nintendo, building puzzles, playing cards, and making the best homemade donuts around.

Mary will be greatly missed by her three daughters: Julie Canney and her husband John of Ayer, Laurie Strom and her husband Earl of Templeton, and Cindy Colon and her husband Felix of Ware; four grandchildren: Jennifer Clayman and her husband Dan of Rindge, NH, Matthew Damon of Athol, Ryan Strom and his wife Casey of Templeton, and Kyle Strom of Nashville, TN; and four great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Lily, Joe, and Anthony.

She was predeceased by her sister Irene Prentiss of Hubbardston, brother Frankie Prentiss of Hubbardston, sister Elaine Suojanen of Virginia Beach, VA, and great-granddaughter Emberly of Rindge, NH.

Mary’s life will be celebrated with a graveside service only on Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 AM at Brookside Cemetery (Rt. 68) in Hubbardston, MA.

In lieu of flowers, Mary has requested that contributions in her memory be made to Emberly’s Embrace c/o Jennifer Clayman, 77 Woodbound Rd, Rindge, NH 03461.
