ATHOL – Leon A. Mabey, 76, of Athol, died peacefully at his residence Wednesday morning after his battle with Dementia, November 23, 2022, with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Gardner on August 16, 1946, son of the late William and Alfreda (Desreusseau) Mabey and was a resident of Athol for most of his life. Leon was a graduate of Athol High School where he enjoyed sports like football, wrestling and track.

In Leon's earlier years, he diligently worked on farms from Massachusetts to New Hampshire. He worked at L.S. Starrett Tool Company for 43 years as a crib manager until his retirement in 2014. For many years, he also worked beside his love Lynn in their catering business, Affairs Unlimited Catering. 

An avid outdoorsman, Leon enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, bird watching, carpentry and bowling. For many years, he was a member of the L.S. Starrett Bowling League. He enjoyed country music and Elvis, trips to the ocean and the White Mountains. Leon also loved cooking for friends and family, keeping many family traditions alive, like homemade donuts, French meat pies, sauerkraut and golabki.

Leon was a member of the Elks Club, where he often enjoyed participating in their clam bakes, Lithuanian Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles 4545, American Legion, Orange Sportsman's Club and North Quabbin Lodge of Masons. 

He leaves his long time partner in crime, Lynn Wesockes; four children, William “Bill” Mabey of Fitchburg, Lisa Bushee of Athol, Christopher Mabey of Turners Falls and Kaitlin Mabey of Athol; grandchildren, Johnny, Kelsey, Christopher (Junior), Ashley, Orion, Rylan, Reese and Rouri; great grandchildren, Jack, Emmett, Savannah, Lilyana and Kinsley and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Mabey and a sister, Doris Smith who both succumbed to their battle with Dementia and Alzheimer's as well.

In lieu of flowers, we ask you to please donate to the Dementia Society of America or the VNA Services of Gardner, MA.


A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
