With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Kerttu Janhunen, born on October 26, 1928, in Pyhäjärvi, Finland, who left us on May 22, 2026. Kerttu's life was characterized by her creative pursuits and generous spirit. She was a loving mother, sister, and friend, always humble in her interactions with others. Her quiet, strong, and kind nature will be missed by many.
Kerttu was an integral part of the Digital Equipment Corporation, where she worked for many years in Inspection/Quality Control before retiring. Her dedication to her work was only surpassed by her commitment to her faith. As a devout Lutheran, Kerttu was an active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashby, MA. Her faith was foundational, guiding her through life's many transitions. In the words of the Lutheran hymn, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" Kerttu lived these words every day.
Kerttu enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including sewing, knitting, gardening, and cross-country skiing. Her creativity was evident in her beautiful handmade garments and her stunning garden.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Linda Janhunen; her stepson, Jeffrey Janhunen, and his wife, Karrie; her sister, Inkeri Halonen, and her daughter-in-law, Donna Janhunen; and several nieces and nephews in the USA and Finland. She was preceded in death by her father, Lauri Ahola; her mother, Olga Kivela; her son, Eric Janhunen; her stepson, Martin H. Janhunen; and her ex-husband, Martin U. Janhunen.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 11 am in the Messiah Lutheran Church, 750 Rindge Road, Fitchburg. Burial will follow in Woodside Cemetery, Westminster.
In remembrance of Kerttu's life, the family asks that any tributes be made in her honor to the Messiah Lutheran Church, 750 Rindge Road, Fitchburg, MA 01420. Please feel free to leave memories and upload photos to Kerttu's memorial page at mackfamilyfh.com.
