John William Gregg

ATHOL - John William Gregg, 85 of 15 Ivy Drive, Athol, died Tuesday, February 7, 2006 in the Athol Memorial Hospital, Athol. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, on April 1, 1920, the son of the late John F. and the late Catherine (Payne) Gregg. He served as a Boatsmen First Class during World War II in the Navy on the USS Tennessee from 1942 to 1945 and was aboard the submarine when it was bombed in Pearl Harbor. He resided in Athol since1950 and was an Inspector, employed by the L.S.Starrett Company for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, was an avid reader and Red Sox fan. He was a member of the Athol/Orange Lodge of Elks No. 1837, the Athol VFW, the Edward H. Phillips American Legion Post No. 102, and the Roy L. Boyce Post no. 650 Veterans of Foreign Wars . He was a communicant of Our Lady Immacualte Church. He enjoyed his family. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Eleanor (Godish) Gregg; 4 nieces,Toni Phillips of Athol, Lori Mousseau of Athol, Kelly Perkins of Albequerque, New Mexico and Gina Oliver of CT; one nephew, Joseph Brassell of PA; two great nieces, Lauren Goddard and Ashlyn Perkins; and two great nephews, Myles Perkins and William Oliver IV. He was predeceased by one brother, William and one sister, Marion. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 10, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
