John Gabrenas

December 16, 1913 — February 24, 2002

ATHOL-John Gabrenas, 88, of 170 North Orange Road,, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH, after being stricken ill earlier. His wife, M. Emma (Godin) Gabrenas, died in 1993. He leaves two sons, Jack Gabrenas of Athol, and Michael Gabrenas of Petersham; two daughters, Lorraine Black of Oklahoma City, OK, and Nancy Lefsyk of Schenectady; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a son, Richard J. Gabrenas, who died in 2000. Born in Athol, Dec. 16, 1913, a son of Dominika and Anastazia (Kopustas) Gabrenas, he was a lifelong resident of town. He attended Athol Schools. Mr. Gabrenas was employed at the L. S. Starrett Company for 38 years, retiring in 1979. He was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church. He enjoyed ice fishing, mushrooming, model trains, and flower gardening. The funeral will be held Thursday from the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main Street, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
