Joan M. Newton

ATHOL - Joan Mary (DeSantis) Newton, 86, passed away peacefully Friday, October 21, 2022 after a short period of declining health.

Joan was born in Athol on November 11, 1935 to Vincent and Julia (Maselli) DeSantis.  In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Newton, her daughter, Susan M. Piro, and her sisters, Mary Koroblis, Carmela Nacca, Anna Bryson, Toni Boccardi and Angie Kane.

Joan grew up in Athol, graduating from Athol High School in 1953.  Prior to her retirement, she worked for over twenty years in the office at Girardi Distributors.

Joan was passionate about life, her family, her great faith, and strongly believed in staying active.  She is survived by her son, Brian Newton of Athol; two daughters, Cheryl Levesque and her husband Paul of Northborough, Cathy Savoy and her husband Michael of Athol; one brother, Dominic DeSantis of Wilmington, NC; seven grandchildren, Carrie Tamillo, Melissa Enos, Sara Newton, Thomas Levesque, Aimee Farrell, Timothy Savoy, Nicole Savoy; eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol, MA.  All attending are asked to go directly to the church.  Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.

There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Joan’s memory be made to Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School Street, Athol, MA  01331 or to the Town of Athol - Animal Shelter, c/o Athol Police Department, 280 Exchange Street, Athol, MA  01331.
