We mournfully announce the passing of Janice Howard (affectionately known as 'Grammy' to those who held her dear) on March 26, 2026. Born on April 10, 1942, in Templeton, Massachusetts, Janice was a beacon of compassion and generosity throughout her life. A loving wife to Jeffrey Howard and dedicated mother to their sons, Lee and Dean, she was the cornerstone of the family she cherished above all else.
Janice attended Templeton elementary schools and graduated from Narragansett Regional High School in 1960. She married Jeffrey Howard on May 20, 1961.
As an active member of the Congregational Church of Phillipston, Janice's faith was a guiding force in her life. She served with dedication in the church's Ladies' Benevolent Society and played a key role in managing the finances for the Phillipston Bazaar for over two decades. Her dedication to her community was evident in her work, and she was honored as Phillipston's Citizen of the Year and served as the Finance Committee Chair in 2006. Janice's professional journey included years in the office at Bay State Abrasives, followed by more than 20 years in the office at the Templeton Developmental Center, where she finished her career as a recreational therapist.
Beyond her civic duties and professional pursuits, Janice found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the thrill of thrift shopping. Her love for board games and card games was only superseded by the joy she found in sharing these moments with her beloved grandchildren. Janice's love and laughter filled her family's lives and her community, making every place she lived - from Templeton to Westborough to Phillipston - a little bit brighter.
Janice is survived by her husband, Jeffrey, her son Lee, and his wife Zilicia, her son Dean and his fiancee Kelly Barnard, grandchildren Corey Hamel, Vanessa, Samantha, Alexander, Marygrace, and William Howard, and many beloved nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Nancy Whiting, and many other family members and friends. Janice was predeceased by her brothers, Robert Brown, Jr., and Mark Brown, and sisters Linda Stoddard and Paula Niemela.
As the Bible verse Proverbs 31:26 describes, "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue," so too was the story of Janice's life, filled with wisdom, kindness, and love.
We invite you to share your memories and photos of Janice on her memorial page, celebrating the life of this remarkable woman. Mack Family Funeral Homes, Gardner - Chapel, 105 Central Street, Gardner, MA, will be handling the arrangements. We find comfort in knowing her legacy will continue in the hearts of those she touched.
