ATHOL – Helen L. (Young) Bassett, 79 of Athol, passed away Friday, April 14th, 2023, at the home of her son, surrounded by her loving family after a short battle with cancer.  Helen was born in Athol on October 11, 1943, to the late Edward A. and Genevieve (Schenk) Young.  She graduated from Narragansett High School and did housekeeping for Mrs. Ellsworth along with working at Cass Toy Company then spent her life raising her three children with her husband Donald who died in 2021, and to whom she was married for 59 years.  Helen enjoyed going for car rides to Keene and Ware as well as going to yard sales and spending time with her grandchildren and doing puzzles.  She volunteered at Hazels Clothing Center in Orange for over 23 years.  She was predeceased by her sister Marie Tatro (2013) and her brother James Young (2014).  

Helen is survived by her two sons  - Kenneth Bassett and his wife Gayle of Athol, Keith Bassett and his wife Kathy of Troy, NH, her daughter Rebecca Bassett and her fiancé Mark Meunier of Gardner; six grandchildren - Keith Bassett and his wife Mayra of Keene, NH, Garrick Bassett and his wife Cera of Athol, Jacob Bassett and his girlfriend Allison LeBlanc, Carley Bassett, Katelyn Koski, Emily Desruisseau; four great grandchildren – Ethan and Jillian Bassett, Violet Bassett and Lucas LeBlanc.  She is also survived by her three sisters – Carol McCall of Vacaville, CA, Janice & Rick Tiilikkala of Leominster, Betsy & James Geikie of Athol; and two brothers – Richard Young of Farmington, NH, and David Young of Orange.

The family would like to thank the Oncology dept at Athol Memorial Hospital and Heywood Hospital, Care Central VNA and Hospice and her granddaughter Carley who was her Personal Care Assistant during her last 6 months.  

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11am at Silver Lake Cemetery, Horrigan Ave entrance, Athol.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hazel’s Community Center, 17 W. Main Street, Orange, MA, 01364 or to one’s choice.
