Ernest Frederick Richards of Petersham, MA died peacefully on June 25, 2025 at the age of 101. Affectionately known as “Smilin’ Ernie” to those who knew him, was born on February 28, 1924, in Lancaster, MA. He was a beacon of joy and a wellspring of laughter, touching the lives of many with his loving, funny, supportive, and generous nature. Ernie’s infectious smile, which earned him his nickname, reflected his love for life and the people around him.
Ernie spent his youth in Lancaster and Winchendon before joining the US Army during World War II. Stationed under the command of General George Patton, he marked his service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Corsica, France, and Germany. His dedication to serving his community and fellow veterans earned him several prestigious awards and citations. Ernie was known for his musical talents, which he developed from a young age. He was famous for his singing, yodeling, and guitar playing, skills he taught himself by listening to the radio. The Sears catalogue guitar he bought with money earned from picking and selling blueberries was a cherished possession. Over the years, he performed with various instrumental groups, later forming a trio with his wife and daughter.
After his military service, Ernie worked as a fork lift driver at New England Wooden Ware in Gardner, MA. Following his retirement in 1990, Ernie continued to serve his veterans’ community as an Honor Guard of the Gardner VFW Post 905 at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon until the age of 96. He was also a life-member of the Baldwinville American Legion Post 373. In his later years, he resided in Petersham, MA, with his daughter, Karen, and granddaughter, Emma.
Ernie was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Adams) Richards, step-father, Joseph Lausi, mother, Blanche Lausi, and son-in-law, Mark Hager. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Hager, and granddaughter, Emma Hager.
