GARDNER/LEOMINSTER – David L. “Red” Hendren, Sr., 83, recently of Leominster, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2023, in Gardner, at the home of his son and caregiver, David, Jr., following an extended illness. He has “GONE FISHING!”
Born to Charles H. and Minnie Lee (Hamilton) Hendren on September 8, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, David was raised in Memphis and graduated from Treadwell High School with the Class of 1957. Immediately following his graduation, David enlisted in the United States Army and actively served for three years at Fort Devens (Security Agency Training Center) attaining the rank of Specialist 4th Class. Following active duty, he served for three years in the Army Reserve, XIII Corps at Fort Devens. On October 9, 1960, he married Shirley Mary Brow in St. Cecilia’s Church and then raised four children, David “Larry” Jr., Chris, Todd, and Donna, on “French Hill” in Leominster.
He was employed by ITT Suprenant in Clinton for 10 years; San-vel Concrete in Ayer for 21 years; and, in Maintenance at McDonald’s near Searstown, Leominster, following his retirement from San-vel.
He enjoyed camping, bowling, square dancing, picture puzzles, card and table games with family and friends, and relished bass fishing and pitching horseshoes. He was a Life Member of the Franco-American War Veterans, Inc., Leominster.
David is survived by two sons, David, Jr., and Todd; a daughter, Donna Boucher; sons-in-law Leo Boucher and Alan Agnelli; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hendren; grandchildren Jonathon Hendren and his wife, Meghan; and, Erica Boucher and Matthew Boucher; great-granddaughters Abigail and Maddison Hendren; a brother, Charles H. Hendren, II of Virginia; a sister, Patricia G. Mason of Tennessee; and, many nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and close friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Shirley, who passed away on June 1, 2023; his son, Chris (2000); and, siblings Sharon Lee Carroll (2016) and James “Mike” Hendren (2000).
Prayers will be offered for David on Friday, July 28, 2023, at 10:00 am in the Simard Funeral Home, 14 Walker Street, Leominster, followed by full military honors and burial with his wife, Shirley, at St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Leominster. There are no calling hours.
