Athol

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of David H. (Benny) Allen Jr. - 88 years old. He was born on February 28,1938 and passed on May 17, 2026. He graduated from Athol High School in 1956. David spent 48 dedicated years working for the LS Starrett Tool Company as a supervisor in the shipping department, he worked at the Snow Hill Ski Lodge in Phillipston, MA as a lift operator as well. In 1992, he moved to Mt. Airy, North Carolina, to work at that Starrett Company location. He lived there for 20 years, with his wife before moving back to Athol to be close to family in 2010.

David was a Deacon and member of the Athol Congregational Church. He set up booths for the church fair in the uptown common in Athol for many years. He was a member of the Athol Lions Club and the Athol Orange Elks Club. David coached Little League for 2 years for the Rotary Club while his son was on the team. Benny loved square dancing, NASCAR, and was a Civil War buff. He attended a Civil War reenactment in North Carolina with his wife and best friends Kenneth and Sandy White. He enjoyed camping and had a camper at Exeter Elms Campground in NH for many summers. He had a great love for the ocean and reading books. He took pride mowing his lawn and often mowed his neighbors lawn to help them out.

He is survived by his wife Ruth (Bacon) Allen. They had been married for 66 years. David is survived by his daughter Terry Stange and her husband Bill, a son Timothy Allen and his wife Linda. He also leaves behind his beloved grand -children, Shyla Stange and her fiancé, Donald, Travis Stange, Timothy Allen and his wife Tiffany, Dustin Allen (Chelsea), and great-grandchildren Brooklyn Kennedy (Jordon), Rayna Kennedy, Makiya Robinson, Aaliyah Stange and Nolan and Hudson Allen. He recently met his first great-great-grandchild Octayvia Hunt.

David was predeceased by his parents David H. Allen and Lillian (Barrows) Allen, his sister Joanne Gordon, brothers Robert Allen, Stephen Allen and Alan Allen. He leaves many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.

A special thank you to Sandy White, Harry and Sharon Smith and Dottie Truckey for bringing him a meal or dessert and always checking on him. This was greatly appreciated by him and his family. We thank anyone else who helped in any way that are not mentioned.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Memorial Service on Friday, June 12, 2026 from 11:00AM-12:00PM at Mack Family Funeral Homes, Athol-Orange Chapel 110 New Athol Road, Orange, MA

The Allen family invites family and friends to the King Phillip Restaurant, 35 State Road in Phillipston, MA from 1:00 to 3:00 PM to continue celebrating David's life and the memories shared with him.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in David's memory to the Athol Animal Shelter, 450 Thrower Road, Athol, Mass. 01331.
