Charles Allen Woodward Sr., 86, of Hubbardston, Massachusetts, passed away on January 17, 2026, surrounded by love. He was born on March 9, 1939, on Breezy Hill Dairy in Hubbardston, the son of Everett Brigham Woodward and Mary Annie (Bumpus) Woodward.
He lived on the same street his entire life, a true testament to his deep roots and love for his hometown. From a young age, he learned the value of hard work—milking cows, baling hay, and even delivering milk before heading off to school. Charles was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Green (and her husband Kenneth) and Harriet “Carmen” Lovell. He lived a life full of love for his family and pride in working hard.
Despite the many names he went by (Chuck, Charlie, Dad, Grandpa, Bapa, Gramps), he was known everywhere he went and never missed a chance to share a story or catch up with a friend over coffee at The Stars & Stripes Diner. In his younger years, he was deeply involved in the community he cherished. He served as deputy fire chief, muster team captain, and president of the Brothers of the Brush during the Bicentennial and was active with the Hubbardston Unitarian Church. He was also an avid ballplayer, playing in Gardner leagues and for the Rehabs Over-40 team at the Hubbardston Rod and Gun Club.
He also enjoyed participating in the Saturday Round Table Group at the South Gardner Hotel. In quieter moments, he enjoyed working on puzzles, reading local newspapers, and trying his luck with scratch tickets!—simple pleasures that brought him joy. Chuck loved to travel, enjoying trips throughout the United States—especially Hawaii—and abroad to England.
Since he was a young boy, Charlie often said he wanted to drive a truck, and he fulfilled this lifelong dream, driving both short and long haul for companies including Finans and NEFX. He also ran the old Hubbardston General Store, where many fondly remember his famous “Egg McCharlies” and grinders. Even in retirement, he continued working with Waterworks Tool Company and Prescott Lawns and More, making deliveries and doing miscellaneous tasks. He never lost that joy of being behind the wheel.
Charles leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann (Mikas) Woodward, and his children, Debra Comeau and her husband, Vincent, of Gardner; Charles Woodward Jr. of Hubbardston; and Wendi Grazzini and her husband, Christopher, of Denton, Maryland.
He was a devoted and adored grandfather to ten grandchildren—Cassie, Lori, Hannah, Jeremiah, Rachael, Courtney, Jenna, Patricia, Sam, and Gabby—who will forever remember him as funny, kind, and endlessly supportive. He was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Chuck’s life was one of love, laughter, hard work, and deep community ties. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hubbardston Senior Center in his name.
Graveside services will be held in the spring.
