Neil A. Hachey

ATHOL – Neil A. Hachey, 86 of Athol, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at Athol Hospital. Neil was born on October 1, 1930 in Gardner to the late Anastase Hachey and the late Bernice (Hachey) Hachey. Neil grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the Class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. He attended St. Joseph University, New Brunswick, Canada majoring in bilingual studies in Business Administration. He worked for 9 years at the former Union Twist Drill, Reed & Print in Worcester for 26 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the oldest steel workers union in Massachusetts and was the Local Union 1315 president for 7 years. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church, charter member of the Athol JC’s and the Quabbin Snowmen, where he was past president. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Athol Council 1182 for over 60 years and held the position of Grand Knight in 1957; 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Bishop Garrison Assembly #406, past commander and color corps commander for 20 years; Scout Master for BSA Troop 18-Our Lady Immaculate Athol; swimming instructor for 12 years at Lake Ellis and Silver Lake; and a member of the Athol American Legion 25 year member. Neil counseled swimming and life saving merit badges at the Athol YMCA for the scouts and taught children swimming at the YMCA. One of his greatest joys was portraying Santa Claus for several area groups, churches and families for many years in the Athol / Orange area. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, August 28, 2017 at 10:00 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial with full Marine Honors will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery. Calling Hours will be held Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Neil’s name may be sent to Our Lady Immaculate Church Food Pantry, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331.
