ASHBURNHAM- Bertha L. ( Brennan) Landry, 92 of Ashburnham died Monday, September 24, 2018 peacefully, at her home, with love ones and caregivers by her side after a period of declining health.   She was born on August 14, 1926 in Ashburnham, and was one of 10 siblings. She was raised by her mother Eda Stafford Brennan and her Aunt Min Versaille  after her father William Brennan Sr. left the family in 1933.   Bertha’s siblings include William “Billy” Brennan, Rita Bacon, Leonard Brennan, Thelma Finn, Barbara Poitras, Paul Brennan, Robert “Bobby” Brennan, George Lashua and Janice Harling. She was the last of her siblings to pass away, and was known lovingly by many nieces, nephews, friends and children as “Aunt Bert”. Bertha married Wilfred “Crook“ Landry in 1946, and was a devoted Aunt too many Landry nieces and nephews too, as he had seven siblings. Wilfred  pre-deceased her in 1999, so too did all his Landry siblings Edgar, Emma, Henry, Albert “Chick“, Lila, Viola, and Robert. In the last decade of her life Bertha represented her generation to many local families, and she enjoyed hostessing a Memorial Day celebration at her home each year to honor her family members. Her own life was full of loving service and she was enriched buy it. She attended Ashburnham and Leeds public schools and Cushing Academy. She worked for Whitney Manufacturing Company as a laborer. In the late 1960’s she attended evening adult education classes at Oakmont Regional High School and gained the skills to become a clerk in the Family Services Department of the State of Massachusetts, working in the Ashburnham, Gardner, and Fitchburg office for 22 years. She also served as Warden to the South Ashburnham precinct an election days. Bertha served as a Girl Scout and 4H Leader teaching many girls how to sew. She loved to sew, quilt and cook, and truly enjoyed homemaking. She was well known for her pies. She leaves her daughters, Marsha Zimmer and her partner William Zimmer of Portland Oregon, Wendy Margo and her partner Dan Henry Deeks of Ashburnham, her grandchildren Jason MacDonald, Ethan MacDonald, Emily Bilbao and her spouse Denise, Daniel Margo and his spouse John, Amy Deeks and Will Deeks and her great grandchildren, Ari Dean and Eliana Bilbao.  Although she will be greatly missed, she will be long remembered for her honest and practical approach to all that comes in life. Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 5 to 7 PM in the Mack Family Funeral Home, 105 Central St., Gardner. A private burial will take place on Saturday, September 29, 2018  A memorial celebration to which all friends are invited will take place at Bertha’s home from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Yes, we will have the Memorial Day celebration in 2019. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Bertha’s honor to the Gardner Visiting Nursing Association, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.
