L. Keith MacEwen

PHILLIPSTON- Lawrence Keith MacEwen passed away peacefully at his home in Phillipston on Sunday, February 25 at the age of 90. Keith was born in St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia, on April 12, 1927. His parents, Lawrence and Mabel Nowlan MacEwen, moved the family to Phillipston when Keith was an infant. There his grandfather and father owned and operated a 100 acre dairy farm on Narrow Lane. At the age of ten, Keith’s father died and the family moved to the center of Phillipston where he would spend his youth. Keith would like to tell how he went to every one-room schoolhouse in town. Keith had a love of sports playing baseball and softball in the Spring and Summer and ice hockey and basketball in the Winter. He graduated from Athol High School in 1944. In 1945, at the age of 18, Keith enlisted in the United States Army. After his discharge from service in 1946, on February 24, 1947, Keith received his Certificate of Naturalization becoming a United States Citizen. Keith worked at the LS Starrett Company for 43 years in the payroll department, retiring in 1989. In retirement, Keith enjoyed playing golf, working around his home, watching sports, reading his newspapers and enjoying his grandchildren. Keith was the longest member of the Congregational Church of Phillipston, joining at the age of 15. Keith and his loving wife, Nancy, were married in Phillipston on June 27, 1953. Keith leaves his children, Scott and wife, Carol of Capitola, CA, Garry and wife, Cathy, of Westminster, Cynthia Brown and husband, Chris of Raleigh, NC, Deborah O’Loughlin and husband, Jim, of Leominster; his grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Mark and wife, Jennifer MacEwen, Amy, Adam, and great grandson, Sawyer MacEwen, Michael Cicconi, Jennifer and Kyle Brown, Ryan and Sean O’Loughlin; a sister, Laurel Killian of Phillipston; a brother, Richard MacEwen of Marlborough; many nieces and nephew. He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Clifford, and brothers, William and Donald MacEwen. The funeral will be held Saturday, March 3, at 11:00 A.M. at the Congregational Church of Phillipston, with the Reverend Stephanie Flynn. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Congregational Church of Phillipston, 60 The Common, Phillipston, MA 01331. The family would like to thank the hospice doctors and nurses. Dr. John Harrington for his visits, Claudia Marsh, and care givers Kathy Barry, and Tina O'Niel. The family would also like to thank the Winchendon Heath Center for all their extra special care.
