Joseph A Sawicki

GARDNER – Joseph A. Sawicki, 95, of 107 Chestnut Street, Gardner, died Saturday, September 30, 2017 at home. He was born in Phillipston on July 15, 1922, son of Adam Joseph and Rozelia (Seiwnczkoska) Sawicki. He married Virginia Teir on June 28, 1947. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. Joe worked for Frank Smith Silver Company and Perfection Paint. But most of his career he spent in the furniture industry, including at Thayer Furniture, J.R. McDonald Ltd and Lawrence McCoy before forming his own hardwood lumber broker business, J.A. Sawicki Corporation Company. He served on the Gardner City Council for several years, was president of Gardner Museum in 1992-93 and served on its board. He earned two Associate degrees from Mount Wachusett Community College in 1994 and 1997. He was very proud to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 from Fitchburg State College at the age of 84. He leaves five daughters – Marilyn Audette and her husband Paul of Rutland, Martha Danderson and her husband Robert of Port St. Lucie, FL, Kathryn McKinnon and her husband Alan of Marblehead, Janet Gould and her husband Steve of Cotuit, Caroline Hurst and her husband Jim of Asheville, NC; 11 grandchildren – Carlen Audette, Meg Eckstrom and her husband Mark, Emily Bradshaw and her husband Tyler, Erica Dryden and her husband Chad, Joe Sparlin and his wife Lydia, Alan McKinnon III, Garrett McKinnon, Lloyd Gould and his wife Stephanie, Cooper Gould, Riley Hurst and Julia Hurst; six great grandchildren – Jenna and Ethan Eckstrom, Ella and Samantha Bradshaw, Magnolia Dryden and Joey Sparlin and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Virginia; four brothers – Alex Sawicki, Stanley Sawicki, Walter Sawicki and Chester Sawicki; and three sisters – Annie Hetnik, Charlotte (Danielson) Ducharme and Mary Krymowski. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 10:00 am in the Annunciation Parish – Holy Rosary Church, 135 Nichols St.,. Gardner. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm at the Lamoureux-Smith & Poliks Funeral Home, 105 Central St., Gardner. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Adult Continuing Education - MWCC Foundation, 444 Green St., Gardner, MA 01440.
